The Banwen Ironworks started in 1844 - there are no records of smelting activity after 1870.
It was capable of producing 90 tons of pig-iron weekly. All materials were transported via the Brecon Tramroad and Swansea Canal.
The remains of the Boiler House and Furnaces are still visible. The original settlement of Banwen, including workers' cottages and a school, was located in this vicinity.
